A must visit for anyone interested in polar exploration.
I've read a fair amount about polar exploration, particularly around the race to the South pole but seeing articles from the expeditions in person made it feel that much realer and somehow better convey the hardships suffered.The museum also covered the native peoples of the Arctic, to whom the Arctic and its difficulties was just daily life, and their interactions with those seeking the Northwest Passage which was really interesting to see more about.I think it would have been better to expand a bit further on the work that the Institute and others are doing around Polar research today and maybe link it more directly back to the scientific work done by the early explorers but otherwise I think it was excellent.
Very interesting museum. It wasn't very busy either. It is not the biggest place but it has lots of exhibits. My children also enjoyed it (aged 9 & 4). We stayed there for around 45min. Also entry is free
Quite a nice change of pace from Cambridge in general. Quiet, uncrowded, affordable and scientific. Most people know the names of polar explorers. Scott, Shackleton, Amundsen, Franklin and others. Fill in the incredible stories behind them with pictures and artifacts.If you are a Shackleton admirer, be sure to check out the replica beside the building of the boat he sailed to get help for his stranded crew. THAT is what he sailed 900 miles of Antarctic ocean in.Admission is free with a request for donation.
Interesting displays of the equipment taken on journeys to the Poles. The photos tell the sometimes tragic story and there are good displays on climate change and it's impact on the ice sheets. It's a specialist museum the makes for a rewarding visit. Free entry and knowledgeable staff, well recommended!
